Day 116 – Glow worms at the Waitomo Caves

Having barely spent anytime with Mike (he works loooong hours), he had booked the day off to spend some time with us. After breakfast, me, John , Mike and Lynda headed to the Waitomo Caves.

The Waitomo Caves offer a variety of packages including a combo pack of a tour of the caves and black water rafting (rafting on individual tubes in the dark). I don’t think Mike or Lynda would have been up for that and neither would I for that matter. I’m a wimp I know. Anyway, when we go there, Mike kindly paid for all of our entrance fees for a tour of the caves. There is a tour every half an hour and they last for around 45 minutes.

We were led into the caves by our guide and walked down some steps. It is not too claustrophobic. In fact, it is quite well ventilated with high ceilings. We walked for around 250 metres stopping at a few places before we got to the cathedral, a large cavern famous for its acoustics.

After this, we headed to the main tourist attraction – the glow worm grotto. We were led to a small area with a low ceiling. It was pretty dark but if you dipped your head and looked up, you could see the glow worms light up. There were loads of them and it was beautiful. Afterwards, we hopped onto a small wooden boat and travelled along the river in the cave to see more of the glow worms light up the inside sky. The boat trip took us outside of the cave where the tour ended.

We decided to have a quick tea break in the cafe and a couple of bowls of chips to share between us. We then decided to go on a little walk just outside of the caves to stretch our legs before heading to a Kiwi house to see if we could see some Kiwi birds. Unfortunately, this place was closed.

It was a really nice “family day out” and I’m glad we managed to spend some time with Mike.
